Best Minecraft Server Software in 2026

A complete comparison of every major Minecraft server JAR — from Vanilla to Paper to Forge — so you can pick the right one for your server.

Quick Recommendation

  • Plugin server (SMP, minigames, network): Paper
  • Maximum customization with plugins: Purpur
  • Modded server (modpacks): Forge or NeoForge
  • Performance mods only: Fabric
  • Pure, unmodified Minecraft: Vanilla

Understanding the Server Software Landscape

Minecraft server software falls into two categories: plugin platforms (Vanilla → CraftBukkit → Spigot → Paper → Purpur) and mod loaders (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt). Plugin platforms optimize the vanilla game and add a plugin API. Mod loaders modify the game engine itself, allowing entirely new content like blocks, items, and dimensions.

You can't mix the two: a Paper plugin won't work on Fabric, and a Forge mod won't work on Paper. Choose one ecosystem before setting up your server.

Plugin-Based Servers

Vanilla

The official server software from Mojang. Zero modifications to the game.

  • Pros: Guaranteed compatibility, no behavior differences, official software
  • Cons: No plugin support, worst performance of all options, no configuration beyond server.properties
  • Best for: Small friend groups (2-5 players) who want the purest experience

Paper

The most popular server software in the Minecraft community. Paper is a fork of Spigot with extensive performance optimizations and bug fixes.

  • Pros: Best performance among plugin servers, massive plugin ecosystem (Bukkit + Spigot + Paper APIs), async chunk loading, extensive configuration, active development
  • Cons: Some vanilla mechanics are altered for performance (TNT duping, sand duping disabled by default — can be re-enabled)
  • Best for: Most servers — SMPs, minigames, networks. The default recommendation unless you have a specific reason not to use it.
  • Plugin compatibility: Runs all Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper plugins

Spigot

The original Bukkit fork that added performance improvements. Paper is built on top of Spigot.

  • Pros: Large plugin ecosystem, stable, well-documented
  • Cons: Slower than Paper, fewer built-in optimizations
  • Best for: Servers that need a specific Spigot-only feature, or legacy setups. Most servers should use Paper instead.

Purpur

A fork of Paper that adds even more configuration options and gameplay tweaks.

  • Pros: Everything Paper has plus extra config options (rideable mobs, custom mob behavior, gameplay tweaks), same performance as Paper
  • Cons: Slightly behind Paper on updates, extra features can be confusing
  • Best for: Servers that want maximum configurability without mods. Great for creative SMPs that want unique gameplay mechanics.
  • Plugin compatibility: Runs all Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper plugins

Mod Loaders

Forge / NeoForge

The oldest and most established modding platform. NeoForge is a modern continuation of Forge with better performance and cleaner APIs.

  • Pros: Largest mod library (100,000+ mods on CurseForge), required for most popular modpacks, NeoForge brings modern improvements
  • Cons: Higher RAM usage than plugin servers, slower startup times, heavier on the server
  • Best for: Modpacks (All the Mods, Create, RLCraft, Vault Hunters). If your players need client-side mods that add blocks and items, this is it.

Fabric

A lightweight, modern mod loader designed for speed.

  • Pros: Fast startup, lightweight, excellent performance mods (Lithium, Starlight, FerriteCore), first to update to new Minecraft versions
  • Cons: Smaller mod library than Forge, not compatible with Forge mods
  • Best for: Servers that want performance mods without the Forge overhead, or technical Minecraft communities. Also great for server-side optimization mods paired with Vanilla clients.

Quilt

A fork of Fabric focused on inclusivity and improved tooling. Compatible with most Fabric mods.

  • Pros: Runs most Fabric mods, improved mod conflict handling
  • Cons: Smaller community, some Fabric mods don't support it
  • Best for: Fabric users who want Quilt-exclusive mods or better mod management

Proxy Software (Networks)

If you're running multiple servers linked together (hub + survival + minigames), you need a proxy:

  • Velocity — Modern, high-performance proxy by the Paper team. The recommended choice for new networks.
  • BungeeCord / Waterfall — The original proxies. Waterfall is a BungeeCord fork by Paper with security fixes. Being phased out in favor of Velocity.
